MY STRUGGLE: LOSING MY MUSE FOR BASS PLAYING

Let me tell you—I’ve been there. I’ve spent late nights glued to YouTube, watching players like Hadrien Feraud and Matt Garrison, feeling like a total fraud. I’d think, “I'm doing it all wrong! I need to practice more but I don't know how I even could manage. Man I am so lame!” The more I compared myself to them, the worse I felt. I started to believe I was too old, too far behind, and that I’d never be the player I wanted to be.
It’s a dark place to be, right? But here’s the thing: That belief? It’s wrong.
Between 2007 and 2017, I battled severe neurodermatitis that left 80% of my skin inflamed. The constant itching and pain were unbearable, and it pushed me into a deep depression. My body was exhausted, my relationship with my girlfriend had turned toxic, and I was working nonstop while also taking care of our dog. I was completely burned out.
In the middle of all this, I lost my muse for bass playing. The instrument that had once brought me so much joy now felt like a distant memory. I couldn’t find the energy or inspiration to pick it up, let alone improve.
THE TURNING POINT: A NEW BEGINNING IN 2020

Fast forward to 2020. The world was shutting down, and honestly, I was feeling pretty shut down myself. But one morning, I picked up my bass—just for a few minutes—and something clicked.
I started small. Simple routines. Nothing fancy. But it reignited something in me. I began taking lessons with Anthony Muthuraja and dreaming up ideas for a YouTube channel.
For the first time in years, I felt that spark again. But even then, I still felt stuck. I’d listen to players like Hadrien and Matt and think, “What’s with this sound? Why do they sound so sophisticated?”
I wanted that sound. Not just the technique, but the soul behind it. And every time I tried to figure it out, I’d get overwhelmed. There was just too much information out there, and with a full-time job, a new relationship, and life pulling me in every direction, I didn’t have the time to dive into it all.
